Furthur Paradise Waits Review at Riviera Maya

Posted
Last week I had the extreme good fortune to attend the Furthur concerts at the Hard Rock Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico. Twenty-five years ago when I first started seeing the Grateful Dead, we typically drove around in beat up vans or cars, and slept in the back seat at rest areas and parking lots. At these shows in mexico, we stayed at an all-inclusive 4 star resort and received foot massages between shows (dancing on concrete is hard on your feet).

I seen the Grateful Dead play 150 times and Furthur only once before this and I have to say they were at the top of their game. As far as the shows go, all I can say is Mind Blown! Perhaps I say that every time, or maybe it is because in the last 20 years I have only seen Bob and Phil play 3 or 4 times. I also caught the surprise Bob Weir acoustic set, I got front row for that.

Recently I have been on a Pig Pen era kick, I pretty much only listen to shows pre 1973 and have been loving all the older songs which the dead never played in the 90s when I was touring, so I was really excited that Furthur has brought back the old repertoire . I know the last 4 years they have played it all, yet I never got to hear it live though. I got to hear many songs for the first time, Cosmic Charlie, Pride of Cucamonga, Unbroken Chain, Viola Lee Blues, Mason’s Children, Cryptical Envelopment, The Mountain Song,  St. Stephen, The Golden Road, Eleven, Death Don’t Have No Mercy, and At a Siding / Terrapin Flyer.

The best part of the shows was the second set of the last night, Dark Star  > Morning Dew > Dark Star > St. Stephen > Eleven > Death Don’t Have No Mercy. I wanted to hear those songs, but in that order in the original way they used to play it was too much to ask. So Grateful.
